This term simply uses a title attribute on a span: EHS

This term (EHS) is marked up as abbreviation that has its own style defined using CSS. Otherwise, as of March 2012 only Firefox 11 and Opera 11.61 (and unknown earlier versions) provide any visual indication of an abbreviation. IE9, Chrome 17, and Safari 5.1.2 do not.

Results

• JAWS 12 supports abbr and acronym, but it's off by default. If turned on, it reads the value of the title attribute rather than the visible text.
• Neither VoiceOver (Snow Leopard) nor NVDA 2011.2rc1 expand any of these items - they read them all as EHS. There don't seem to be any settings that would enable support of abbr and acronym elements.
