Film Scoring

I recently discovered The Cue Tube, an online film scoring community website that includes a variety of short films available for scoring or rescoring. This page features a few examples of my work. None of the original films are captioned or audio-described but I’ve added captions here on the ones that have spoken audio (some do not). The one exception is Glass Half, an animated short featuring two characters (voiced brilliantly by Ryan Millar and Trista Mrema) speaking gibberish in what sounds like some sort of European accent. How would one caption that? Try to do it phoenetically? I seriously considered giving it a shot, but opted for this description instead.

Volcano

Nature is both incredibly beautiful and incredibly violent. The silent footage in this film does an amazing job of capturing both, and I needed my score to do the same.

Ocean

My hope with this one was to capture the depth, beauty, and mystery of the ocean.

Glass Half

This is my all-time favorite Blender animation. Hilarious! So far, this has been my only attempt at scoring animation. It’s challenging! But such a blast. See my notes at the top of this page about captions.

The Lost Piano

Scoring this piece with solo piano was an obvious choice. I really, really love this story and connect deeply with the character. I recorded this score in a single take. It’s a simple score, but might be my favorite.

Shades of Time

I composed this on Memorial Day 2022 in the United States, in honor of those who have given their lives for the American ideal, and in memory of my father, a World War II veteran and fellow musician. My score was also inspired by the senseless tragedy of war and gun violence that plagues our world. And this film comes with a warning: It contains intense war scenes that might be triggering.

I Catch You

This film blows my mind. How intense can a film be when there’s nothing but a man standing while the camera slowly zooms in? The answer: Incredibly intense! And I hope to have contributed to that intensity with my percussion-only score.

Night City: Two Versions

Scoring this film, I found myself at a creative crossroad at 1:36. Should I continue with a purely orchestral score, or introduce an electric guitar? I couldn’t make a decision, so I chose both.

Rosebud Place

Ok, this isn’t actually a film score, but it could be! It’s my first piece written for a full (34-piece) orchestra. I actually have a written score for this one, so if you know of an orchestra who might be interested in performing it, let me know. I’d be honored!
